Your Own Adsense Type Network

May 23rd, 2009

There has been a lot of talk on the boards over the last couple of weeks about big problems (read bigger than the usual problems) with Adsense. Some very large publishers in different industries have been reporting huge swings in CTR, ECPM and revenue – seemingly somehow tied into the latests few Adsense updates and downtime.

A lot of publishers have been discussing alternatives such as YPN, pubCenter, Kontera and Intellitxt. Others have been discussing looking more seriously at in-house ad sales. Read more…

Applications Used in a Typical Day

May 5th, 2009

I’m back. Apologies to those of you who have been checking for new posts (I’m sure there weren’t too many of you!), but I’ve been struck down by the flu the last few days, and before that was on my annual move over to Rhodes where I’m spending the summer.

One of the things that always causing me a bit of work when going abroad for any length of time is making sure I have all the applications and data I need on my travel laptop whilst I’m away.

Site Search and Site Network Search

April 15th, 2009

I got an email from Sarah Shaw following my last post about the relaunch of the InterSites.co.uk hub site, asking for more information about the network search which I mentioned briefly. This post will talk in more detail about site search, and how it can help your users as well as adding a revenue stream. Read more…

I’m happy to announce that we’ve finally relaunched the first stage of our InterSites.co.uk site. For those of you that don’t know InterSites.co.uk is the hub site of the network. It no longer will contain any topic specific content, but will instead be a shop window for every site in the network.

The first stage of this is now live. Each of the 520 individual Inter Sites is listed by the following categories as well as in A-Z form. The categories are as follows: Read more…

Making Money From Small Amounts of Targetted Traffic

April 10th, 2009

When I first started out with my first site back in 1999/2000 the metric most people concentrated on was page impressions. Back then almost all advertising deals were CPM based, and so large numbers of page views – with scant regard to how targetted they were – was order of the day.

As advertising has in the large part shifted away from CPM deals to CPC and CPL/CPA type campaigns so too have the metrics you should be forcussing on. Traffic is no longer order of the day, now Targetted Traffic is far more important even if the overall levels are lower.

Using Paid XML Search Feeds

April 9th, 2009

A popular question I seem to spend a lot of time answering on the forums such as WebMasterWorld is “How do I get paid results on my site?”, or questions around this topic such as “Who is the best PPC search provider?” or “I’ve seen sites advertising in Google where they just list other search results, how does that work?”.

A lot of people running content sites think the only revenue options are Adsense or affiliate programs. Although both can do a great job in monetising content, if you’re looking to truly round out your revenue streams you really should be looking at paid search feeds as well.

Problems With Running Large Networks of Sites

April 7th, 2009

One of the most common questions people ask me (after asking how many sites we have in the network) is “How the **** are you able to work on/run so many sites?” It’s a fair question, and one that no doubt I’ll be coming back to to talk in more detail about in the future. Any of you out there that run one or even a handful of sites will understand that with any web site there is a fair amount of work that goes into keeping it up and running.

Common Questions Part 3

April 1st, 2009

If you haven’t read the previous 2 posts of common questions you’ll probably be better off started there, you can see them at part 1 and part 2.

In this third part I’ll be addressing some of the most frequent questions about monetisation and revenue generation on the Inter Sites.

Q. Do the Inter Sites make money?

A. Yes of course! Although we try and make advertising as unobtrusive as possible (no popups, popunders, overlays etc) the Inter Sites is a commercial network and makes money via advertising.

Common Questions Part 2

March 31st, 2009

The second part of my common questions posts. If you haven’t already read it you should probably start with part 1.

Q. Do you use a CMS/what CMS do you use?

A. We do indeed use a CMS to run the sites. The CMS we use is called Typo3 and is built using PHP with a database backend (we use MySQL). I’ll talk more about Typo3 in detail in a future post, but one of the big benefits is the ability to run multiple sites of a single code base.
